Arpico introduces Arpitec water pump

For the first time in Sri Lanka, Arpitec has introduced a revolutionary new 100 percent food-grade stainless steel water pumps that is exclusively manufactured by Arpico. The new Arpitec water pump is built from 'Number 306' stainless steel, which has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for uses related to human consumption, instead of the brass that is commonly used in water pumps currently on the market.

Many popular water pumps are built using brass impellers that can be dangerous for one's family's health. After some use, these brass impellers, which can contain lead, may undergo a chemical reaction and lead may leach into the water. With over 90 percent of the Sri Lankan population using water pumps, the possibility of excessive lead exposure has become a pressing public issue.

Adverse effects of lead poisoning include irreversible physical and mental retardation in children, including deficits in attention span and learning ability. Adults who drink water contaminated with lead may suffer from kidney problems and high blood pressure.

Targeting the most vulnerable members of our society, lead contamination has been highlighted as one of the most critical public health problems in many other societies. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, a US government agency, "lead can affect almost every organ and system in the body and may cause anemia, a disorder of the blood and damage the reproductive system in men." The introduction of the revolutionary new 100 percent food-grade stainless steel Arpitec water pump allows customers to protect their families from these risks.

In addition to its significant health advantages, the Arpitec water pump also boasts of numerous superior engineering features. Due to its stainless steel construction, the pump's rotor doesn't rust, as is the case with most other locally-found water pumps, which use carbon steel rotors.

Therefore, users can avoid the all-too common situation of washing their clothes with pump water, only to discover that their garments are stained a rusty red. Compared to other locally manufactured water pumps, the Arpitec pump uses the lowest amount of electricity, leading to significantly cheaper energy bills and less strain on the environment.

Apollo Fertility Centre celebrates first anniversary

The Apollo Fertility Centre celebrates its first anniversary today and has given hope to many with a milestone achievement of 110 successful IVF pregnancies and 10 bundles of joy born within their first year.

Fertility team

The Apollo Fertility Centre was set up in September last year and has since then made themselves the benchmark in the In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) field through the revolutionary methodologies used at the centre. May saw the birth of the centre's first IVF baby boy - who was aided by the fertility centre. Simultaneously, the centre has seen many more such breakthroughs in fertility treatment, ranging from successful IVF pregnancies of women who have endometriosis, distorted tubes, fibroids and other such complications - even to those who have had ectopic pregnancies where both fallopian tubes were removed.

Treatment also included cases where the male has lower sperm counts - as low as less than one million (average sperm count is usually 20 million per milliliter).

Now as the centre progresses towards their second year, every month sees two to three babies being born - following the excitement of the first baby boy, then twins in June and this month the first baby girl to be born at the hospital.

The centre consists of a team of highly skilled and specialized doctors, gynaecologists, embryologists, endocrinologist, urologists and radiologists who conduct comprehensive diagnostics to identify fertility problems and their root causes, with emphasis on non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures. The team, headed by the two gynaecologists - Dr. Nishendra Karunaratne and Dr. Sudeera Uduwela, together with in-house medical doctor and embryologist Dr. Madara Ralapanawe - the only Sri-Lankan doctor to have a post graduate masters degree in Clinical Embryology, carries out many different procedures, some more advanced than others but all focused on being the least invasive.

Dr. Madara and the rest of the team, supported by their highly skilled nursing and technical teams, are driven to maintain the international standard of 35-40 percent for successful IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization) and ICSI (Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection treatments) which they've achieved thus far, whilst also working towards the goal of increasing their success rate to a magnitude of 50 percent in the near future, which only a few places in the world has yet achieved.
