Walter Kalin |
Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Walter Kalin will
arrive in Colombo next week to visit IDP welfare centres and hold
discussions with Government officials, on an invitation by the Disaster
Management and Human Rights Ministry.
Speaking to the Daily News upon his return from Geneva last
afternoon, Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said the
invitation was extended in response to Kalin showing interest to visit
Sri Lanka and also because the Government thought it ideal for the
Special Representative to be briefed on the actual developments on the
ground.
"We thought it a good idea because there is a lot of disinformation
deliberately put out in the international media," the Minister said.
Kalin is expected to visit relief camps and hold discussions with
government officials. Senior Presidential Adviser Basil Rajapaksa MP is
expected to brief Kalin on the progress and future plans of resettlement
and development.
The UN representative, tentatively scheduled to be here on September
22 is expected to remain in the country for a few days. |
