SLFP General Secretary slams ex-President's statement

SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena said yesterday that the statement made by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga that even though the LTTE was defeated there was no freedom in the country could well be a part of the conspiracy currently being carried out to destabilize the country.

Issuing a statement to National Television Rupavahini on the remark by the former President in Thiruvananthapuram in India that placed the Government in an embarrassing position, the Minister said the SLFP strongly condemned such a statement adding that there is a suspicion whether the former President was involved in the current international conspiracy to discredit the country.

He also regretted the claim made by the former President to the Indian media that there was no freedom in the country at a time the Government that is in power is of the party which she gave leadership to.
