LTTE bribed 27 Tamil Nadu political leaders, says Swamy
Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy claimed that he had official
evidence that 27 leaders of various political parties in Tamil Nadu had
received money from the LTTE and that he would go to court on this if
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh does not take action against them.
Talking to newspersons in Chennai, he said he would let out the
details in the court if the PM fails to initiate action.
Naming some well-known leaders among the alleged recipients of LTTE
money, he charged that the organisation had paid them to buy their
support.
On the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) row, he said the onus was on
the Election Commission to come out with a convincing answer and build
confidence. -

Over 38,000 apply for postal votes

There are 38,602 applications for postal votes from Galle, Matara and
Hambantota districts at the forthcoming Southern Provincial Council
Election, the District Assistant Election Commissioner said. This number
includes 11,600 from Matara, 9,360 from Hambantota and 17,642 from Galle.
Financial support for single parent families to start
self-employment
Social services and social welfare Ministry granted financial
assistance to Single parent families to start self-employment ventures.
Twenty five single parent families were grated Rs. 10,000 each at a
ceremony at the Auditorium of the Urban Development Authority, "Sethsiripaya",
Battaramulla, headed by Social Services and Social Welfare Ministry
Secretary V. Jegarasasingham on the August 25. Jegarasasingham, said the
scheme of granting financial support to these families were to start
self-employment ventures was in consequent to a directive by Minister
Douglas Devananda.
She urged the families to work untiringly to better their lives and
try hard to stand on their feet without being dependent on others.
The reviewing of the self-employment schemes will be executed by the
social service officers. Additional Secretary to the Ministry Social
Services and Social Welfare Sunil Samaraweera participated.
Free Umrah visas
The Embassy of Saudi Arabia has issued free Umrah visas to one
hundred Sri Lankan Muslims today.
These Muslim men and women are among more than a thousand of Sri
Lanka Muslims who are proceeding on Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca during
Ramazan this year.
Boost for home gardening

Measures have been expedited to implement 10,000 home gardening
projects in the Batticaloa district under the ‘Eastern Reawakening’
program.
A special meeting was held at Vipulananda Musical College, Batticaloa
by Nation Building Minister and Estate Infrastructure Minister Susantha
Punchinilame.
It has also been decided to improve livestock industry in the
district.
Lankans, Pakistanis nabbed with heroin
The Police Anti-Narcotics Bureau last week arrested two Pakistani
nationals and four Sri Lankans with heroin in their possession in two
separate raids in Colombo.
The two Pakistanis with heroin weighing 97,500 grams and 91,300 grams
were arrested in Kollupitiya.The two Pakistanis and three Sri Lankans
have been detained for further investigation, a spokesman for the
Anti-Narcotics Unit said.
Schools open today

Except the schools which are used for the evaluation of answer
scripts, all schools will be reopened for the third school term today,
the Education Ministry mentioned.
Schools which are used for the evaluation of GCE A/L answer scripts
will reopen on Monday, September 14. |
