Thera

Being divided on political lines on every issue can only retard the
country's development, Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter the Most
Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera said.
While the country should have a strong Opposition to ensure success
in its forward march and to strengthen democracy it is not the function
of the Opposition to criticise the Government at every turn.
The Mahanayake Thera made these observations last Saturday when he
received UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya, Assistant Leader Rukman
Senanayake and Party Chairman Gamini Jayawickrama Perera who sought his
blessings on the occasion of the 63rd anniversary of the UNP.
The prelate also said should the Opposition have cause to criticise
the Government programs it should inform the nation of the alternative
course.
What is being observed on political stages today is mud slinging by
parties and character assassination. The reasons for this the prelate
noted is due to unsuitable individuals taking to politics.
The Mahanayake Thera said leaders of political parties should ensure
not to enrol persons based on their muscle power or financial strength
into their parties.
The Mahanayake Therasaid it is widely agreed that the UNP had done a
great volume of work for the country during the 63 years of its
existence.
The delegation also called on the Mahanayake of the Malwatte Chapter
the most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera. |
