CDA coconut auction in Gampola

The third regional coconut auction by the Coconut Development Authority (CDA) will be held in Gampola, a media release from the Coconut Development Authority said. The success of the Colombo Coconut Auction gave an impetus to coconut growers and to the industry. As a result, it was expanded to Kuliyapitiya and Beliatta.

At present, coconut auctions are conducted on a regular basis in Colombo, Kuliyapitiya and Beliatta. The Gampola Coconut Auction envisages to create a conducive market environment for stakeholders in and around the region. The first coconut auction by the CDA was held in 1995 when there was no organized marketing mechanism in place to sell fresh coconut.

As a result most coconut growers were exploited by the intermediaries, the release said.
