New opportunities in the Eastern Province:

Tri-Star goes to Thambalagamuwa

A new BOI factory of Tri-Star Apparel Exports was opened at Thambalagamuwa in Trincomalee. This opening by a leading manufacturer of apparel is significant as it sends a very clear message to the investor community both overseas and at home that Sri Lanka is back in business and ready to meet all the challenges ahead.

In addition, the opening of such a significant apparel manufacturing plant also provides an insight into the pivotal part in Sri Lanka’s future development that the Eastern Province will play.

Since the factory will employ over 1,000 workers, Tri-Star Apparel Exports has taken a bold step that will transform the lives of many people living in the Thambalagamuwa region.

The BOI commended the Management of Tri-Star Apparel as their action will lead to the creation of new opportunities and infuse much needed vitality to this area. In addition, the factory will play an important role in imparting new skills to workers as they will be employed in a high technology plant.

The opening of this new factory is a positive indicator. It comes at a time when the Government is engaged in safeguarding the apparel sector, which is a strategic industry for Sri Lanka, employing nearly one million and accounting for half of the country’s exports. This is to strengthen the Sri Lankan apparel sector so that it is capable of meeting the challenges posed by the post recession global economy.

This has to be done both at local and international levels with the Government and private sector coordinating their efforts to safeguard existing arrangements and strengthening the presence of Sri Lankan made garments in leading markets.
