Security strengthened in Angulana

Security has been intensified in Angulana after an unidentified group set fire to a house following Thursday's clash between residents and police.

Sources said the residents of Angulana had set fire to a house that belonged to a woman suspected to be the mistress of the former OIC of Angulana police station, T. Jeevi Newton.

The woman who allegedly had a liaison with the OIC had complained to police about the two youth who had teased her. The two youth were later arrested by police on Wednesday night and allegedly killed while under custody. Their bodies with gunshot injuries were found the next day on the rail tracks.

"The woman has fled the area after the incident," sources said.

The double murder sparked tension in the area. Authorities had to call the Army to control the situation and restore order.

Former OIC Thumbeydara Jeevi Newton and Police Constables Bandaragodage Anura Pradeep Kumara, Gallwelage Indrawansa Kumarasiri, Rohan Bandara Nawaratne and Gayan Chathuranga Thotawatte were remanded Thursday evening on the orders of Mount Lavinia Chief Magistrate Harsha Setunge until August 26.

An Inspector of Police, a Sub Inspector and 12 Police Costables were appointed to the Angulana police station on the direction of the IGP. (RJ)
