Heart patient needs funds

Palitha Fernando, a father of two of 1/3, Sriya Mawatha, Keselwatta,
Panadura is suffering from a heart ailment and has been recommended an
urgent surgery which is estimated to cost Rs. 410,000, by Cardiothoracic
Surgeon Dr. Rajeeva Peries of the Apollo Hospitals, Colombo.
An award winning magician, Fernando says he is not in a position to
foot this bill due to his present economic plight and seeks financial
assistance from the public and philanthropists to help expedite him
undergo surgery.

Deaf School PPA honours past pupils
The unveiling of the photographs of three distinguished past pupils
of the school for the Deaf, Ratmalana, B.J.M. Senaratne (Past Vice
President), Sarath Jayawardena (Past President) and Rohan
Widanapathirana (Past President) who have done yeoman services to the
Past Pupils’ Association was held at the Stanley Hall, the school for
the Deaf, Ratmalana recently.
It was organized by the Deaf School Past Pupils’ Association, the
school for the Deaf, Ratmalana.

Elected Assistant Governor
Mulleriyawa National Child Education Foundation (NCEF) Director, Ven.
Bandagiriye Somawansa thera, was elected Assistant Governor of the
International Rotary Movement at its annual convention held in
Birmingham England recently. Rotary International President D.K. Lee
presided over the convention attended by delegates from countries
throughout the world.
Ven. Somawansa was the founder President of the Kolonnawa Rotary
Club.

Aesthetic teacher vacancies to be filled

The Education Ministry has requested all Provincial educational
authorities in the island to put forward the details of the number of
existing vacancies for Aesthetic teachers in Government schools within a
week.
Education Ministry Secretary Nimal Bandara has informed the
Provincial Education Ministries that after getting the details of
existing vacancies for Aesthetic teachers in their respective Provinces.
the Ministry will grant its permission to recruit required Aesthetic
teachers.

Seminar
The Eastern Forum for Resources Development (EFFORD) will conduct a
seminar for the benefit of the year 5 scholarship students who are
sitting the examination this year.
This seminar is organized with the association of "Tharunyata Hetak"
an organization which is functioning under the leadership of Namal
Rajapaksha.
The seminars will be held on August 15 and 16. On August 15
(Saturday) the seminar will be held at T/ Kurinchchakerny Girls Maha
Vidiyalaya and T/ Kachchakodytheevu An-Najath Maha Vidiyalaya. On 16,
Sunday at T/ Kinniya Central Collage and T/ A1-Hira Girls Maha
Vidiyalaya.

SLBC to extend programs
The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation has taken measures to extend
its daily programs from August 17.
Under the proposed program it will start from 5.30 a.m. and continue
up to 7.30 p.m. daily, Chairman Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation
Hudson Samarasinghe said.

Appointments to Prisoner Visitors Board
Justice and Law Reforms Minister Milinda Moragoda has appointed
former diplomat Nanda Godage to head the Board of Prison Visitors. Rajan
Asiriwatham, Arjun Deraniyagala, H.G. Dharmadasa and Imtiyas Ismail were
also appointed to the Board as members by the Minister.

Leaves for Germany
Labour Relations and Manpower Minister Athauda Seneviratne left for
Germany yesterday to attend a seminar and exhibition to mark
International Day of Culinary Art. The seminar and exhibition which
began yesterday will conclude on August 16.

Off to Indonesia, Japan
Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva left for
Indonesia yesterday to take part in two International conferences as the
Chairman of the Executive Board of the WHO. He will deliver the keynote
address at a conference on Maternity Health and Development to be held
in Bali, Indonesia. Minister De Silva will then go to Japan to deliver
the key note address at another conference on New Inventions organised
by the Tokyo University on August 17.

Bus goes off road injuring 55

At least 55 passengers were injured when a bus went off the road in
Polatagama, Karawanella yesterday morning. The injured were admitted to
Karawanella hospital.
The CTB bus was plying from Thalampitiya to Karawanella when it went
off the road in Meeoya, Polatagama around 6.15 a.m. "At least 55
passengers were injured including the driver and conductor," Yatiyantota
police said.
According to police, the bus met with the accident when it was taking
a bend along the Karawanella-Avissawella road.

Special religious ceremony
A special religious ceremony according to Chinese Buddhist tradition
will be held at the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant complex on August 20
to mark the completion of its major construction work.
Malwatte and Asgiriya and Ramanna Mahanikaa Prelates, Minister W.D.J.
Seneviratne, Mahindananda Aluthgamage and Pandu Bandaranayake, a 50
member Chinese Buddhist delegation and representatives of the Chinese
firm C.M.E.C. handling the construction work including its Chairman will
participate, a Power and Energy Ministry release said.
This ceremony marks the completion of the main building housing the
power plant including its roof. The second and third stages of the
construction work would begin soon and the plant is due to start power
generation on an experimental basis in the first half of next year, the
release said.

Remembering Prof Ediriweera Sarachchandra
The Peradeniya University Alumni Association (Colombo Branch) in
association with the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation will telecast a
Professor Ediriweera Sarachchandra commemoration Ayubowan program on
August 16 (Sunday) to mark the 13th death anniversary of the celebrated
dramatist, academic and writer.
Artistes Jayalath Manoratna, Nissanka Diddeniya and Anura Fonseka and
journalist Gamini Sumanasekara will participate in the program that will
also feature music by Gunasinghe and Ranjith Gunaratne.

New road from Ududumbara to Mahiyangana

The first sod of earth will be cut at the auspicious moment at 9.30
a.m. today for the proposed new road to be built from Ududumbara to
Mahiyangana as an alternative route to reduce traffic congestion between
the two towns.
Motorists and the public face difficulties due to congestion on the
Kandy-Mahiyangana route. The Government decided to build the new road as
an alternative route to ease traffic congestion, a spokesman for the
Central Province Chief Minister's Office said.
The first sod of earth will be cut by Environment and Natural
Resources Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, Central Province Chief
Minister, Sarath Ekanayaka, Central Province Agriculture Minister, Nimal
Piyathilaka and Central Province Ministers, he said.

of the Orabi Pasha will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Orabi Pasha
Cultural Centre (Assembly Hall). Ambassador of the Arab Republic of

Association will be held at 9 am today at the Panadura Divisional

CPTA to regularize School trishaws
The Central Provincial Transport Authority has taken steps to
regularise three-wheelers which are used for the school transport
activities in the province.
According to the survey made by the transport authority, over 2000
three-wheelers are being used to transport schoolchildren in Matale,
Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.
