The National Council For Road Safety (NCFRS) is in the process of
increasing road safety awareness at regional and national levels to
develop and implement policies and practices that will reduce road
traffic deaths, injuries and disabilities.
Speaking to the Daily News NCFRS's Chairman Upasena Senanayeka said
most of the accidents were due to ignorance of the road safety
regulations, negligence, indiscipline, drunk driving and violating
traffic rules by road users such as drivers, passengers and also
pedestrians.
Therefore, resolving to promote the road safety, the NCFRS will host
the National Forum convening stakeholders including government
representatives, drivers, pedestrians, passengers, vehicle manufacturers
and importers, service providers, traffic police, schoolchildren and the
private sector representatives.
This opportunity will provide a means for a wide group of
stakeholders to share perspectives and define ways to contribute
collectively towards advancing road safety efforts in the country. The
objectives of the Forum is to raise awareness about road traffic
injuries; strengthen demand for road safety; build political will;
support ongoing sustainable and collaborative efforts to implement the
recommendations of the report on road traffic injury prevention; and
contribute to identifying and mobilizing resources.
He said road safety is more important and needed scrupulous attention
of the road users to prevent fatal accidents. Deaths, injuries and
disabilities due to accidents are not only created socio-economic
expenses for victims and their families, but they also place a burden on
public health services. Therefore, the Parliamentary Select Committee
has been appointed to look into development and enactment of
comprehensive regulations to prevent road accidents.
"We have given priority for the educational programs to make drivers,
pedestrians, schoolchildren, general public and service providers, aware
through Provincial Councils.
