Assault on student:

CCD Director transferred

Colombo Crime Division SSP Vas Gunawardena has been transferred to the Police Headquarters on IGP Jayantha Wickramaratne’s direction. Three police teams are investigating SSP Gunawardena’s alleged connection in the student assault incident.

Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said CCD Director SSP Gunawardena has been transferred to the Police Headquarters by the IGP with immediate effect in connection with the alleged abduction and assault of Nipuna Ramanayake, a student of the Sri Lanka Institute of Information and Technology.

“Gunawardena was transferred as a result of his alleged connection with the assault on Ramanayake,” he added.

He noted that three teams were deployed to conduct a thorough investigation. “A team for disciplinary action, a team to investigate crime and a team from Athurugiriya police are investigating SSP Gunawardena’s alleged connection,” SSP Gunasekera told the Daily News.

Ramanayake was abducted and assaulted by an armed group allegedly led by CCD Director Gunawardena’s son Ravindu V. Gunawardena. Ramanayake was abducted by an armed group on August 5. He is being treated at the Colombo National Hospital after he suffered a serious blow to his head.
