Van fitted with explosives nabbed from Mannar

The Colombo Crimines Division (CCD) seized 20 powerful side chargers last morning in Uppukulam, Mannar and averted a possible suicide mission in Colombo.

Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said a team from the CCD nabbed a Hiace van carrying 20 side chargers each weighing 5kg in Uppukulam on information divulged by three LTTE suspects who were arrested earlier.

The two LTTE suspects were arrested from Badovita, Mt. Lavinia and the other was arrested from Uppukulam, Mannar, he added. “These side chargers were meant to be dispatched to Colombo on a suicide mission. Timely action of the CCD team averted the possible mission,” SSP Gunasekera told the Daily News.

Meanwhile, two youths were arrested in Kalutara South yesterday morning along with three T56 rifles and 45 rounds of ammunition.
