‘Bigger victory at Southern Province’
The people of Uva by endorsing the UPFA program of work by more than
a two thirds majority has cast a major responsibility for voters in the
Southern Province to provide a still bigger boost to that people’s
mandate, said Shan Wijayalal de Silva, former Chief Minister of the
Southern Province commenting on the results of the Uva Provincial
Council elections.
The statement added that people of Uva Wellassa had utilised their
Provincial Council election to strengthen the hands of the President who
is striving hard to steer the country towards an era of development
after defeating terrorism and unifying it under a single banner.
The Uva result also showed that a large section of UNPers too had
voted UPFA as a tribute to the President for eradicating the menace of
terrorism. The results also proved that the Badulla district considered
a safe UNP bastion had tilted towards the UPFA. The message is loud and
clear and that is the UNP and its leadership had no option other than
supporting the UPFA program of nation building work without resorting to
various conspiracies aimed at undermining it.
The Government had already put a development program in place for Uva
Wellassa which is both their good fortune and the statement further
added that the JVP which won a large degree of public confidence at the
previous Provincial elections was decimated this time due to the wrong
policies adopted by it.
The efficiency of the UPFA Chief Ministerial candidate Shasheendra
Rajapaksa and his close ties with the people of Uva too contributed
towards the convincing victory of the UPFA.
The Southern Province is the birthplace of President Mahinda
Rajapaksa and as such people in the Province are already showing signs
of a re-awakening to offer the UPFA government even a bigger victory
than in Uva at the forthcoming Provincial Council elections and he would
therefore request them to come forward and offer a historic win to the
Government to support its nation building effort, the former Chief
Minister said.
