Nearly 170 former LTTE child soldiers sat the GCE Advanced Level in
Vavuniya yesterday as a result of the Government’s humanitarian
operations to free the North and East people from the clutches of LTTE
terrorism, Examinations Department sources said. The Advanced Level
Examination 2009 commenced in 1,827 examination centres yesterday.
The Examinations Department has established 10 special examination
centres in Vavuniya for 1,263 displaced candidates who are presently
housed in IDP welfare villages in Vavuniya. Sources said 166 ex-child
soldiers from displaced camps sat the Advanced Level examination
yesterday.
Under the direction of the Education Ministry, the Examinations
Department had taken steps to conduct several extra classes to upgrade
the knowledge of the students sitting the Advanced Level Examination
this year.
Meanwhile, no incidents were reported during the G.C.E. Advanced
Level Examination which began yesterday at 1,827 examination centres
throughout the country, Examinations Commissioner General Anura
Edirisinghe said.
The examination will continue until September 5 and will not be held
on Sundays. A total of 242,091 school and private candidates are sitting
the examination this year. “Candidates are strictly advised to obey and
follow examination rules so as to ensure a trouble free examination
process. Candidates have to produce their National Identity Cards or an
accepted identity such as a valid passport to establish their identity.
“However candidates who fail to do so will be allowed to sit the
examination, but their results will be issued only after they establish
their identity. The Examinations Department will take strict action
against candidates who flout examination rules,” the Commissioner said.
The Examinations Department has taken steps to ensure the smooth
conduct of the examination. Accordingly, around 300 educationalists will
evaluate the examination process.
In addition, the examination is monitored through 267 Examination
Coordinating Centres. Around 70,000 teachers and officials are involved
in conducting the examination as invigilators at the examination centres.
