Diploma awards ceremony

A ceremony to award diplomas to those who successfully completed Public Administration diploma course conducted by the Management Studies and Commerce faculty of the Sri Jayawardenapura University will be held on August 15, at 8.30 am at the Banking Training Institute of the Central Bank auditorium at Sri Jayawardenapura Mawatha Rajagiriya under the patronage of the Vice Chancellor and faculty heads. Nearly 150 successful candidates will receive their diplomas at the event.


NCMC 3rd Batch Silver Jubilee

The 3rd Batch of students who entered the North Colombo Medical College will celebrate their Silver Jubilee on August 15 at 7.30 p.m.

The Jetwing Beach, Negombo will be the venue.

Doctors Dennis Aloysious, Sathis Jayasinghe and Walter Gooneratne will be special guests of honour. with their colleagues who served on the Board of Governors of the NCMC.

The Alumni of NCMC acknowledge their vision, courage, determination, integrity and the hard work that they put in. All professors and lecturers who were on the permanent staff of NCMC have also been invited as special guests.


CCD arrests vehicle racketeers

Five vehicle racketeers were arrested by the Colombo Criminal Division (CCD) yesterday morning in Colombo and recovered 12 vehicles, police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said.

The five suspects who have leased out vehicles from car sales and companies, sold them, producing forged documents.

"The alleged suspects sold a number of vehicles including cars, vans and jeeps. Twelve vehicles were recovered by the CCD", he added.


New REEL Chairman

The Ex-Chairman of Coconut Development Authority Purasinghe has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Real Estate Exchange (Pvt) Ltd (REEL) by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, at the request of Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardane, with effect from August 6.

Purasinghe, a Bachelor of Science from the Ruhunu University was the Managing Trustee of Lady Lochore loan Fund until recently. He was appointed as REEL Chairman with the resignation of former Chairman Nawalage Bennet Cooray.

The new Chairman Purasinghe assumed duties in his new post on August 6.


Public lecture

Senior Lecturer in Economics, University of Colombo Dr. Sirimal Abeyratne and Feizal Samath will give a Public Lecture on "IMF Loan: Development with or without Foreign Aid" at 5 p.m. on August 13 at the Auditorium of SLAAS, 120/10, Vidya Mawatha (Off Wijerama Mawatha), Colombo 07.


Motor cyclist clubbed to death

A man was clubbed to death on the spot when he was returning home in his motor bike at Ballapanatenna in Balangoda on August 10 night.

The pillion rider was also attacked and severely injured and was admitted to the Balangoda Base Hospital and later he was transferred to the Colombo National Hospital.

The dead man was a father of one Wijitha Shantha, 27, of Ballapanatenna, Balangoda. Balangoda Magistrate and District Judge G.L. Priyantha visited the scene and ordered the Police to send the body to Ratnapura General Hospital for a post mortem.
