Money order lands woman in hot water

A 21-year-old woman who changed a money-order for Rs. 10,000
belonging to a woman doctor was sentenced to two years' rigorous
imprisonment, fined Rs. 20,000 suspended for 10 months and ordered to be
released after paying back the money to the owner by Provincial High
Court Judge Kurunegala Manilal Waidyathilake on Monday.
The suspect Subashani Ekanayake of Ibbagamuwa pleaded guilty to the
charges of changing a money-order belonging to Dr. Disna Chamali Peiris.
Attorney-at-law Pileesiyan Perera who appeared for the suspect told
Court the second suspect in this case had misled her by promising
employment abroad. State Counsel Naleen Hewawasam told Court that the
suspect had prepared a forged identity card and pretended to be the
owner of the money-order. This is a punishable offence. She had carried
many forged identification papers to carry out these activities, several
times according to the instructions of the second suspect. There has
been several complaints made against the second suspect. Further hearin
was put off.
