Acquiring the relevant skills needed in the labour market is
imperative as the country is in the midst of uncertainty in business at
present, said Director General, Employees Federation of Sri Lanka (EFC)
Ravi Peiris.
He was speaking at the launch of the ICT Training program for
Visually handicapped people at the EFC Auditorium yesterday.
He said that enterprises are facing difficulties and challenges that
they had never experienced before and employees have a sense of
uncertainty in relation to employment. Peiris said that over the years,
the EFC Employers Network on Disability has been engaged in various
initiatives.
It has provided employment opportunities to over 200 disabled persons
and also conducted training programs on a variety of subjects with the
objective of equipping them to the world of work.
He said that ICT has been identified and recognized as one of the key
areas in which skills of the people need to be sharpened and upgraded so
that it would be possible to exploit the opportunities that may come as
a result of the global recession.
Therefore, the EFC Employers Network on Disability will commence the
training program on ICT for the visually handicapped and thereby expand
the opportunities to a wider section of the community.
“The response received from the visually handicapped with regard to
the training program has been very encouraging and already 42 visually
handicapped persons have enrolled to undergo this training, he said.
The EFC is confident that the training will result in opening a new
chapter in the lives of the visually handicapped people which would
create new employment opportunities for them.
