Voting system of SLRFU to be changed
One of the first tasks to be carried out by the Interim Committee of
the SLRFU headed by former national player and ex-President of the Rugby
Union Dr. Maiya Gunasekera will be to change the voting system of the
SLRFU.
The Minister of Sports and Public Recreation Gamini Lokuge on
Thursday appointed an Interim Committee to run the affairs of rugby
headed by Dr. Maiya Gunasekera with former Manager of National Athletic
team and a leading business administrator and advisor to the Minister
Kiran Atapattu as the Secretary cum Treasurer.
Atapattu said that Western Province with seven clubs in the ‘A’
Division have only eight votes while Central Province with just one ‘A’
Division club too had eight votes while Sabaragamuwa and Southern
Province which do not have a single ‘A’ Division club were entitled to
six and twelve votes respectively.
It had also resulted in four members who had not played in any major
rugby tournaments being elected to the SLRU Council including former
Secretary Duke Hamid.
He also said that the Interim Committee will appoint a Rugby Advisory
Board comprising former leading Sri Lanka ruggerites - Ajith Abeyratne,
Daya Jayasundera, Rohan Guneratne, Priyantha Ekanayake, Asoka Jayasena,
Michael Jayasekera, Hisham Abdeen, Group Captain Nalin de Silva, Lasitha
Guneratne, Saman Jayasinghe and Imthishan Marikar to advise them on
matters pertaining to national rugby. |
