Chandrika clinches triple crown for the sixth time

Chandrika de Silva clinched a triple crown for the sixth time in the 56th National Badminton Championship which concluded at the Royal College Sports Complex yesterday.

Chandrika de Silva, an old girl of Swarnapali Balika Maha Vidyalaya, Anuradhapura won the Women’s Singles title by beating Achini Ratnasiri 7/21, 24/22 and 21/16 and bagged the Mixed Doubles title with Niluka Karunaratne by overcoming Hasitha Chanaka and Upuli Samanthika by 21/10 and 21/10 and then partnered Nadeesha Gayanthi to take the Women’s Doubles title by defeating Achini Ratnasiri and Upuli Samanthika by 21/9, 21/18 and 21/16 in the final.

Chandrika de Silva who was coached by Kamal Gamlath has won the Women’s Singles title 11 times, Women’s Doubles 13 times and Mixed Doubles on eight occasions in the Nationals.

Niluka Karunaratne clinched a double by winning the Men’s Singles and Mixed Doubles titles.

Niluka Karunaratne took the Men’s Singles title for the eighth time by beating his brother Diluka 21/10, 21/8.

Niluka and Chandrika de Silva bagged the Mixed Doubles title by overcoming Hasitha Chanaka and Upuli Samanthika 21/10 and 21/10.

Results -

Women’s Plate Singles: Tharaka Nilushi beat Ishadi Shehara Perera by 21/19, 15/21 and 21/19.

Men’s Plate Singles: Rasika Chalaka Peiris beat Vibavi Madusha Kukulaga by 21/14 and 21/14.

Masters Doubles: Sunil Galabodage and Mohamed Hamdoon beat Muaaz Mubarak and Mohamed Bongso by 21/13 and 21/14.

Masters Singles: Sunil Galagodage beat Nimal Gunasiri 22/20 and 21/11.

Men’s Veterans Doubles: Darshana Senaratne and Kamal Gamlath beat Niroshan Wijekoon and Sanjeewa Wickramanayake by 16/21, 21/18 and 21/15.

Men’s Veterans Singles: Niroshan Wijekoon beat Kamal Gamlath by 21/17 and 21/9.

Mixed Doubles: Niluka Karunaratne and Chandrika de Silva beat Hasitha Chanaka and Upuli Samathika 21/10 and 21/10.

Women’s Doubles: Chandrika de Silva and Nadeesha Gayanthi beat Achini Ratnasiri and Upuli Samanthika 21/9, 21/18 and 21/16.

Men’s Doubles: Dinuka Karunaratne and Diluka Karunaratne beat Niluka Karunaratne and Ramindu Ranasinghe by 21/18, 13/21 and 21/17.

Women’s Singles: Chandrika de Silva beat Achini Ratnasiri by 7/21, 24/22 and 21/16.

Men’s Singles: Niluka Karunaratne beat Diluka Karunaratne by 21/10 and 21/08.
