‘Government looking after estate sector’
Nadira Gunatilleke
This Government has given due recognition to the problems and
difficulties faced by the estate community. We are been treated with
respect and dignity and the Government is looking into our problems by
helping develop the estate sector.
This was the opinion of 1000 UNPers who received SLFP membership from
Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.
“They said all Governments of the past had badly neglected the estate
sector and were only interested in our people during election times”.
According to them, the present Government led by President Mahinda
Rajapaksa took over several estate hospitals and developed them with all
modern facilities and human resources. The Government took over the
responsibility of estate communities from the estate companies. This
helped to develop the infrastructure facilities in the estate sector
significantly.
“The price of fuel and other things are not our problems. Such
problems do not have an impact on us. What is important to us is our
identity, dignity and the quality of life”, they added. |
