SP Governor to send proposals to Security Council

Security provided for schoolchildren in the province should be maintained at the highest level, said SP Governor, Kumari Balasuriya.

She was speaking at the Provincial Security Council meeting at the Governor’s Secretariat Auditorium.

She said President Mahinda Rajapaksa has already taken over the rule of the East, from the brutal LTTE terrorists, through the armed forces, and there is little left in the North to be captured in order to usher in peace to the whole country.

The Governor said defeating the angry LTTE terrorists might turn to various repercussions in the South is why we should be very keen on the security of schoolchildren in the province. This Security Council meeting was attended by high ranking Army, Navy, Air Force and Police high commands and all the other departmental heads in the province.

Zonal Directors of the province explained security measures they had taken so far for the security of the schoolchildren. SP, ED Director M.J. Karunadasa said, the security measures set up in that regard were still going on unabated.

W.R. Weerakoon, Matara Zonal ED Director said, that security steps were still under way in Matara area, and steps to form vigilant committees including parents, teachers and also children were included in these committees.

Galle police was all time helpful to provide security to schoolchildren in the division, specially at times when the schools close for the day, said Galle Zonal ED Director Mrs, K.S.K. Dayasekara.

Police were of opinion that the transport of Petroleum should be done by trains, in order to avert risks on the way. Once a Petroleum product fire began it was very difficult to extinguish, and oil bowsers should not be allowed to park in various towns, and if these parked, there must be strict security measures, they opined.

Random checks at Hambantota bus stand is a must when buses parked there in the night, the Police pointed out. Security situation from town to town was discussed in depth at the meeting.

Meanwhile, Governor Balasuriya said the security situation at Karapitiya Hospital at which large crowds flocked together were satisfactory. She also announced that, the Governor’s Office collected a sum of Rs. 13 lakhs and 61 thousand rupees for the Ranaviru Funds by way of selling Ranaviru Flags in the province.

Suggestions and proposals made at this meeting will not be sent to respective Ministers for redress, but I would convey all those to the Security Council headed by the President, she said.
