Delayed rains worry farmers

Owing to the lack of anticipated rain, the paddy cultivation in Matale district is being affected during the current Maha Season.

The paddy cultivations under the minor irrigation schemes are completely paralysed as well as the Chena paddy cultivation. The farmers who are cultivating paddy under the major irrigation schemes are in a quandary.

Because of the existing circumstances over 20,000 farmer families are in difficulties. With the price increase of rice in the open market, the price level of the paddy has also gone up.
