Fonterra Brands Lanka came forward with a CSR initiative of Rs. 12 million to uplift two schools in their neighborhood, Biyagama Central College and Biyagama Kanishta Vidyalaya last week.

A ceremony was held at the two schools to celebrate the successful conclusion of the project with the newly enhanced school band in attendence. The students are now eager to get to their classes in the morning because the buildings are sparkling and they love the ambience this has created.

Most importantly, now they are never hot and thirsty all day because drinking water is available in the schools with bearing the cost of pipe borne water distributed by the National Water supply and Drainage Board. Earlier, whenever there was a drought, the children were without water to quench their thirst.

The project is a carefully planned strategy that is in keeping with Fonterra’s vision to uplift both nutrition and education in Sri Lanka. Chief Minister for the Western Province, Reginald Cooray was eloquent in his praise to the dairy company for their contribution to the upliftment of the standards at the school.

“Fonterra has made an exemplary contribution to not only the nation’s nutrition but also Sri Lanka’s education by setting a fine example that has uplifted the well-being of our school children” he said at the closing ceremony of the schools’ renovation project.

The upliftment endeavour brought a considerable change in the lives of the 2400 boys and girls attending the two schools. “Our students can now enjoy a safer, healthier learning environment with access to clean water and new facilities” said the Principal of Biyagama Central College, W.G. Karunarathna. “Fonterra’s support has transformed the schools.”

Fonterra Brands Lanka Managing Director Achyut Reddy said: “It has been a rewarding experience watching the difference our refurbishment has made to the children’s learning environment. Education is an important focus for Fonterra not only in Sri Lanka, but also in communities where we operate around the world. We see this project as an investment in the next generation of leaders for our community.”

The refurbishment included the construction of a new building for extracurricular activities defined in the syllabus, sprucing up the existing main hall and entrance and rebuilding two toilets. The construction of a boundary wall was also a part of the project to improve Biyagama Kanishta Vidyalaya. At Biyagama Central College, Fonterra not only rebuilt two toilets, the Company provided drinking water on tap and met the cost of an improved water supply system.

Along with the improvement of the facilities, the students were also trained on looking after their environment and the importance of good housekeeping. Now the children of Biyagama have schools they love to attend with a bright smile.

Fonterra is a multi-national dairy company and one of the world’s leading dairy ingredients and consumer businesses.
