Puttalam’s 18 ton garbage to be recycled to compost

Garbage collected in Puttalam town which amounts to nearly 18 tons daily is to be recycled into compost manure.

This follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Puttalam Urban Council and ‘Holcim’ Cement Ceylon Ltd. on September 15.

According to the MoU, the Holcim Management will undertake to produce compost Natural Fertiliser out of the debris collected in the Puttalam Town - amounting to 18 tons a day.

Puttalam Urban Council Chairman M.N.M. Nazmi signed on behalf of the Council and Ananda Rajakaruna - Factory Manager, Holcim signed on behalf of Holcim.

Holcim will invest Rs. 7 million for Stage I of this programme. This programme will take three years to complete and will cost Rs. 12 million. Production will commence on December 1. The UC will market the fertiliser produced by this factory.
