Outstation athletes dominate on day four

D.A.H. Wijesinghe from St. Joseph’s College, Kegalle proved that she is at her best at the All Island National School Games which continued at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo yesterday when she entered the record books for the u-19 Girls 100m hurdles event with a time of 14.66secs.

First , she overcame the previous record of 15.0 seconds held by B.G.L. Madhubanthi of Sumana Balika MV, Ratnapura clocking 14.99secs. in the semi-final yesterday. Later in the final, she clocked 14.66secs. to update her own record.

Wijesinghe’s was one of the seven records which were produced on the forth day and of the meet.

P.V. Dhanushka Priyadarshanee from St. Thomas’ Girls High School, Matara cleared 11.67m in the girls’ u-19 Triple Jump to rewrite her own record of 11.67m.

The Girls’ u-21 Discuss Throw, T. Anusha from Salvaperagasa Ladies College Vavuniya, threw a distance of 41.27m to shatter her own record which was set last year - 36.63m. This was followed by a sprint record which came in the Girls U-15 400m when R.M.S.K. Ratnayake from St. Joseph’s Girls College, Kegalle erased the old record of 1min. 00.74secs. clocking 1min. 00.10secs. for the event.

Meanwhile, W.M.J. Weerasinghe from Walala A. Ratnayake MMV, Menikhinna, with a time of 3min. 59.94secs. set a new record for the boys under-19 1500m. event.

In the Girls u-17 100m hurdles event, G.A. Ishara Sandeepani from Ferguson High School Ratnapura, clocked 15.27secs. to erase the record set by Gayani Mahaliyana of St. Bridgett Convent set last year.

Yesterday’s last record was produced in the Girls u-15 100m semi final as A. Makalanda from Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya finished with 12.89secs.

Yesterday’s all record breaking performances were achieved by the outstation athletes. The meet which saw over five thousand athletes from 1004 schools from all parts of the island including 473 athletes from Northern Province and 548 athletes from the Eastern Province competing, will conclude today.
