All systems in place for smooth poll

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ensured that maximum security will be in place to prevent election violations and provide a conducive environment for voters to cast their ballot at polling stations at tomorrow’s North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council Elections, Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardhana said.

Troops enter strategic Thunukkai town

Army troops attached to the 57 Division yesterday entered the strategically important Thunukkai town, an alternative hideout of LTTE Leader Velupillai Prabhakaran in the Western flank of the Mullaitivu district, west of the Jaffna-Kandy A-9 road and are continuing search operation to flush out Tiger cadres, military sources told the Daily News last night.

Blood Bank Director Dr. R.M. Bindusara and a doctor of the Bank Dr. M.I.L.A. Nazeer have been transferred to the Family Health Bureau and Angoda Mental Hospital by the Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry Secretary Dr. Athula Kahandaliyanage.
