Wimal Weerawansa urges masses in special statement:

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Parliamentary Leader Wimal Weerawansa yesterday said in Parliament that Sri Lanka was faced with a grave situation and no political party can play with that situation. He would not be neutral politically though he was expelled from the party. He would do every possible thing to serve his people. He urged the people to rise to overcome various conspiracies hatched by external forces with local support.

Govt will not waver in fight against terrorism - President

The Government will not waver in its determination to fight terrorism to the end, President Mahinda Rajapaksa declared yesterday. Speaking at the launch of the Central Bank's 2007 Annual Report in Colombo, President Rajapaksa said the LTTE's atrocities would harden the Government's resolve to eliminate terrorism.

Allegations on Madhu Shrine unfounded

The Government yesterday categorically denied allegations emanating from certain quarters that Sri Lankan Security Forces have been shelling the Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu, sacred to the Catholic community, and held in high esteem by all communities in Sri Lanka.

Economy grows by 6.8% in '07

The economy grew by 6.8 per cent in 2007, the annual average rate of unemployment reached its lowest ever recorded level of 6 per cent, while the per capita income rose further to US$ 1,617 in 2007.
