Death of former Daily News Editor
COLOMBO: Senior Journalist and former Editor of the Ceylon
Daily News B.H.S. Jayewardene (73) passed away yesterday at a private
nursing home in Colombo after a brief illness.
Having started his journalistic career as the Kuliyapitiya
Correspondent for the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd. (ANCL) Lake
House, Jayewardene joined the now defunct Times Newspapers Group in 1960
and served as a staff reporter for five years.
In 1970 he returned to Lake House and served on the Observer and was
appointed Editor of the Ceylon Daily News on January 1, 1978.
Jayewardene resigned from the Daily News in 1982 and took up the post of
Executive Director of the Manila based Press Foundation Asia.
On his return to the country in 1982, he rejoined the ANCL and was
appointed Editor in Chief of the Central News Bureau.
He was appointed to the ANCL Director Board on February 12, 1990.
Having left the ANCL, he joined the Wijaya Group and served as a
consultant to the Daily Mirror editorial until his demise.
He served as Secretary General of the Sri Lanka Press Association.
Jayewardene studied at Trinity College, Kandy and at Jaffna College,
Vaddukodai. He leaves his wife and four children. The funeral takes
place on Thursday at the Jawatte Cemetery at 3 p.m. His remains are
lying at his residence at 291/17, Edward Avenue, Havelock Road, Colombo
