Best Achievers of St. Benedict’s honoured

The best achievers of St. Benedict’s College were honoured at a ceremony held at college premises on Wednesday. The event was organised by Welfare Association, Old Boys Union and Development Foundation of St. Benedict’s College under the direction of Rev. Bro. Granville Perera, Director of the school.

Director speaking on the occasion thanked the organisers of the event for their commitment which is the best way to encourage the young ones for a better future, the students of St. Benedict’s has done well in both versions education and sports.

During the last three years students have excelled in sports also came up with fine exam results which were appreciated by everyone. These are the factors that gave the impression for old boys to honour the boys who keep the Bens flag flying.

On the sporting field the Bens have made great strides during the year 2007.

They made special performance in the field of Athletics winning the overall championship at the all island Athletic Championship for the year 2007 making history for the college. Many medals were won in different age groups.

Dilhan Aloka was outstanding winning golds in the 400 and 800m. His success during the year also brought him the Best Athlete of the year. Meanwhile Nuwan Abeywickrama was awarded the trophy for the up and coming athlete.

These two athletes also performed well at the recently concluded South Asian Junior Athletic Games bringing honour to their Alma Matar. The Bens also produced many soccerites during the past three years, said Director Bro. Granville Perera.

The college’s coaches have done a fine job in producing many national players in different age groups. Infact some of them had the opportunity of captaining the national teams. Soccer has been the most famous sport in the school right throughout.

This sport, has brought many trophies to the college while producing the best soccerites for the country. Cricket and Hockey standard which was at a higher level in the past, saw a decline but with the coaches and masters-in-charge have taken great care and improved the games.

This year the teams have shown a superb cameback and is sure to regain the former status. Tennis, Basketball, Swimming and Dance sport too were given prominence in the school but could not reach great heights in the recent past.

But dance sport was one sport that saw Sumedha Rukmal came brilliantly to win many awards. Director pointed out that with this sort honouring the students are sure to take great strides in the field of sports to bring more accolades to the school.

All students who performed well were hosted to a dinner by the organisers.
