An all-night pirith ceremony followed by a Sanghika Daana (almsgiving) was held at the ‘Gemunu’ facility of the Navy to invoke blessings of the Triple Gem on the Navy which marked its 57th anniversary yesterday. Here Navy Chief Wasantha Karannagoda offers alms to the Maha Sangha. Religious observances were also held at temples, churches, kovils and mosques to mark the anniversary. See also page 9


Chennai Police arrest Sea Tiger, two others

An LTTE Sea Tiger and two others who had attempted to procure a boat for the outfit, have been arrested by the police in Chennai. Police also seized Indian and Sri Lankan currency worth Rs 478,000 from them.

Sri Lankan firing on fishermen unintentional - Indian Navy

The Indian Navy came to the defence of its Sri Lankan counterpart over the allegations of firing at Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait, saying that such incidents were not intentional and fishermen often got caught in crossfire between the Sri Lanka Navy and the LTTE.
