Rupee depreciation unwarranted - CB
The depreciation of Sri Lanka Rupee by 0.99 per
cent during the past two weeks against the US Dollar is not based
upon any fundamental macroeconomic factors. Export earnings
continued to increase during the first half of 2007 outperforming
the high growth recorded in the same period in 2006. Exports during
the first half grew by 12.9 per cent from US dollars 3,162 million
in 2006 to US dollars 3,569 million in 2007.

Good agricultural practices to increase tea productivity
Tea research scientists have revealed that Sri
Lanka has the potential to yield 10,000 kg of made tea per hectare,
Chairman Tea Research Institute, Gerry Jayawardena said speaking on
"Sustainabilitea" through Good Agricultural Practices at the
International Tea Convention held at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel
Colombo yesterday.

Record increase in insurance penetration
Sri Lanka's current insurance penetration rate
is between 13 to 15 per cent. This is expected to increase by
another seven per cent before the end of next year, Sri Lanka
Insurance, General Manager-Personal Lines, Anil Meegahage said.
