More attacks from LTTE

JAFFNA: The LTTE carried out indiscriminate mortar attacks on the Security Forces and civilians in North and East in two separate incidents yesterday injuring five civilians. Two LTTE cadres were killed when the forces retaliated.

The LTTE cadres fired on an Army foot patrol in Thirunaveli, Jaffna using small arms on Monday night. Troops successfully repulsed the attack, a spokesman for Media Centre for National Security said.

The spokesman said troops conducted a subsequent search and recovered the bodies of two LTTE cadres along with two T56 weapons, three magazines and 57 rounds of ammunition. There were no casualties among the troops.

Meanwhile, the LTTE cadres directed fire from the uncleared areas using 81 mm. mortars toward the Security Forces in Sithandi and Chenkaladi areas in Batticaloa yesterday morning. The attack was repulsed.

According to the spokesman some mortars fired by the LTTE cadres fell in the vicinity of Temples, Churches and the Devapura railway station.

Five civilians in the Morakattachchi Hena village were injured in this incident. They were removed to the Batticaloa hospital, the spokesman said adding that the Security Forces suffered no casualties. The Forces also facilitated passage for the SLMM to inspect the area and the injured civilians, he added.
