Presidential Poll this year
 

THE Supreme Court yesterday ended the controversy surrounding the date of the next Presidential Election, ruling that it should be held this year. The Five - Judge Bench of the Supreme Court allowing the Fundamental Rights application of the Jathika Hela Urumaya directed the first respondent Elections Commissioner to take steps to hold the election in the current year in terms of the Article 31 (3) of the Constitution and the applicable law.

THE Presidential candidates in the forthcoming election, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe were given a warm welcome by their Parliamentary colleagues yesterday as Chief Government Whip Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle conveyed the Supreme Court decision to Parliament.

Qatar Airways to build 100 houses for tsunami victims


Qatar Airways which operates 14 scheduled flights a week between Doha, capital of the State of Qatar, and the Sri Lankan capital Colombo, has decided to construct 100 houses for the tsunami affected families. "Twenty five houses would be handed over to families next month," said CEO Akbas Al Baker.
