President reiterates LTTE should be entered into democratic mainstream

PRESIDENT Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday reiterated that the LTTE should be entered into democratic mainstream to build national amity. She said the proposed Tsunami Relief Council is the first step towards this end. The President made this observations making a special address via satellite to a propaganda rally organised by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in Kandy last evening.

British Minister stresses importance of setting up P-TOMS

STRESSING the importance of setting up the proposed P-TOMS (Post Tsunami Operational Management Structure), the visiting British Development Minister Gareth Thomas assured that this deal would not lead to lift the ban on the LTTE in UK.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations has repaired over 3 400 boats in Sri Lanka. These repairs will allow nearly 12 000 fishers to resume their livelihoods after last December’s tsunami destruction. According to government and FAO estimates, 54 percent of the total fishing fleet was either made un-seaworthy or was totally destroyed by the tsunami. The UN agency, which works through government-owned boat building and fishery supply company Cey-Nor Foundation Ltd, mobilised resources from a number of international donors to fund this activity.
