Beware of elements seeking to create communal discord - IGP

IGP Chandra Fernando yesterday appealed to the public not to fall prey to machinations by certain elements to instigate communal tensions exploiting the current political situation.

Fernando told the Daily News that the Police will be keeping an eye on those bent on creating chaos and fomenting ethnic tensions. Security has been tightened in key cities and towns on the direction of the IGP to face any situation.

The IGP has instructed all Police stations, specially in Colombo District, to arrest any person or persons attempting to disrupt the smooth flow of life of the people.

"They will be arrested irrespective of positions and produced before Court. We will move court to detain them until completion of the investigations," the IGP said. These instructions have been relayed to all police personnel in the country.

The IGP had also instructed the Traffic Police to take stern action against motorists who violate traffic laws. 'We must not allow the community suffer due to certain activities of a section of the community,' the IGP said.
