Pradeepanjalee VIII:

Sri Lankan, Eastern Music and American Jazz - a fusion



Pradeep Ratnayake

The United States-Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission will sponsor Pradeepanjalee VIII, sitarist Pradeep Ratnayake's next concert in his Pradeepanjalee series which will be on November 9, 2004, at the Lionel Wendt Theatre at 7 p.m.

The Ambassador of the United States Jeffrey Lunstead will be the Chief Guest on this occasion.

Highlighting the musical links that can bring together different cultures is a consistent endeavour of Pradeep Ratnayake in his compositions.

This concert will feature a coming together of leading musicians from various disciplines - Sri Lankan folk music, Eastern and Western classical music and American Jazz music.

Admission to the concert will be on the basis of free passes that will be available at the United States-Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission at No. 7, Flower Terrace, (Off Flower Road), Colombo 7 from November 1, 2004.

Musicians will be Pradeep Ratnayake - Sitar, Piyasara Shilpadhipathi - Sri Lankan percussion, Harsha Makalanda - Piano, Grant Chamberlain - Saxophone, Upula Madhushanka - Tabla, Chandralal Amarakoon - Tabla, Alston Joechim - Bass Guitar, Shiraz Noor Amith - Acoustic Drums, Udaya - Kandyan Drums, Sarath Kumara - Flute, Madhavi Shilpadhipathi - Voice and Lakshman Joseph de Saram - Violin.


FOACUS - on visual art

Art lovers and enthusiasts will get another opportunity to view the FOACUS Exhibition of Visual Arts 2004 held at the National Art Gallery, Colombo recently when it is staged at the auditorium of the Sri Jayewardenapura University's Department of Sinhala once again on November 1 and 2 at the special request of the university.

FOACUS (Foundation of Art and Culture Studies) is an association of ten talented artists who have passed out from the Department of Art and Sculpture of the Kelaniya University's Aesthetic Studies Institute.

The ten artistes R. M. Dharmasena, Sarath Gunasiri, Jagath Ravindra, Anil Atapattu, Dayananda Pieris, Nandakumara Alahapperuma, Bernard Manatunge, Suneth Aravinda, Shantha Jayalath and Sudath Abeysekera have contributed art works for this exhibition.

The artistes who discuss the current socio-economic and political process they have encountered through their creations say that they hoped to safeguard their identity in the diverse field of Sri Lankan Art.

They hope to make a more productive contribution towards art and culture by holding more and more exhibitions and workshops in the future.
