24.5% increase in gem and jewellery exports

Sri Lanka's total exports in the gem and jewellery sector recorded an increase of 24.5% percent during the first nine months of this year compared to the corresponding period of 2003, according to Director General, of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority, Piyadasa.

Lanka exported Rs. 21.58 billion worth of gems; jewellery, geuda and diamonds from January to September last year while exports increased to Rs. 26.87 billion during the corresponding period of 2004.

He said that increased awareness on the Lankan gems in major importing countries and the strong economies in U.S.A. and Europe were the main reasons for the above increase in export earnings.

The 'NGJA' organised the "Sri Lanka Pavilion" for the 13th consecutive year at the "Hong Kong Jewellery & Watch Fair" held from September 19-23 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.
