Police deny assault

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

Kirindiwela police yesterday denied involvement in the death of a suspect while in its custody.

Gampaha Division Acting SSP, Jagath Keenawinna said allegations made by the public that the suspect B.A. Piyadasa died as a result of a police assault were completely false.

The incident sparked violent scenes at the funeral of the suspect on Sunday which compelled police to baton charge and fire tear gas at the participants.

SSP Keenawinna said the crowd led by a certain political party tried to bring the body to the Kirindiwela Police even though they had passed the cemetery.
