Negombo Magistrate M. N. Burhan yesterday discharged and acquitted former Minister and Gampaha district MP Jeyaraj Fernandopulle who was alleged to have aided and abetted to murder former UNP Minister Wijayapala Mendis near an election polling booth at Kadirana North, Katana on December 5, 2001.

The verdict was given on the Attorney-General's instructions.

The case was earlier filed by Mendis.

The entire Negombo Bar stood up for him during the trial.
