Choksy criticism angers Jeyaraj

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka and Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

Opposition MP Jeyaraj Fernandopulle raising a privilege issue in parliament said yesterday the Chairman of the Salaries Commission Tissa Devendra had criticised and challenged Minister K. N. Choksy according to a newspaper article.

According to the standing orders, nobody can criticise a Member on a speech he had made in the House, he added. Fernandopulle said: "I am not trying to protect the Minister, but it is our duty to protect the rights of Members. Chief Government Whip and Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said this is a serious violation of the Standing Orders and requested the Chair to pay serious attention.

"Please treat this seriously because this letter has been released to the media," he added.

Finance Minister K. N. Choksy said the last paragraph of the letter cast aspersions on the House.
