by Tissamaharama special correspondent The proposed oil refinery and 300 megawatt Power Generation Project will become a reality by April next year. The feasibility study is being prepared by a team of Chinese experts. An extent of one hundred acres has been allocated for this project already at Mirijjawila, Hambantota. 165,000 barrels of crude oil will be refined here per day. Kerosene oil, gasoline and diesel would be by-products. The water for the refinery will be obtained from the excess water of the Walawa ganga which flows freely to the sea without being used for any fruitful purpose. If the necessity arises sea water will be used after desalination. The ships bringing crude oil will be anchored four kilometres away from the sea shore, as such the ships will not affect the sea water or the sea shore. Refuse, refuse water and refuse of the refinery will not affect the environment because an environment-friendly refuse outflow system will be set up. National sanctuaries in the vicinity will not be affected as a result of the oil refinery. |
