by Matara central correspondent Quality dry tea being produced in Matara district is an added encouragement and strength to the tea factory owners of the district to acquire the highest results in dry tea production. It is also essential that the tea factory owners be properly guided and educated through seminars of this nature, said the Vice President of the Tea Factory Owners' Association, Somasiri Wickremasinghe at a seminar held at Solis Hotel, Nupe, Matara. This seminar was organised by the regional office of the Sri Lanka Tea Board to stress the need and importance of using airy bags woven out of coir-yarn and transport of green leaves in vehicles suitably equipped with racks for the purpose. Somasiri Wickremasinghe said that it is necessary that packing bags and driers be made available to factory owners at cheap rates. It is also important that the road leading to factories be maintained well by the respective authorities for the easy and safe transport of green leaf from the fields to factories. Assistant Commissioner of Sri Lanka Tea Board B.M. Fareed said seminars conducted by the Board of Growers and Producers have shown good results. When we consider the low country products, Matara district is in the lead. All those who are connected to the industry must get together to prevent the wastage of green leaf. M.R. Hassema presented the welcome speech and S.J. Wijeratne the vote of thanks. Asoka Somarathna, Advisor of the CIC fertilizer company, Y.G. Indrajith, Officer in Charge of the Tea Board, Chamara Dissanayake, Asia Shriyaka Tea Brokers Association and Bevan Wijesiriwardhana, Assistant Director of Southern Development Authority also addressed the seminar. |
