Livy R. Wijemanne, the veteran broadcaster and one-time Chairman, Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) passed away on Novmeber 24 after a brief illness at his residence in Colombo. He studied at Royal College, Colombo and passed Cambridge Senior in December 1935 and the London Matriculation in 1936. He did his post matriculation studies at St. Peter's College, Colombo 4 and at Pembroke Academy, Colombo 3. He joined the Ceylon University College in 1938 and the Ceylon law college in 1944. Thereafter, he joined the Colombo Broadcasting Station, Colombo 8 as a relief announcer and became a full-time broadcaster in 1945. In 1971 he assumed duties as Director, English service and was appointed Chairman, SLBC on February 1, 1984. He represented Sri Lanka at various seminars, discussions and training programmes. He relinquished duties as Chairman on March 23, 1989. He was to be honoured on November 27 by the International Open University at the BMICH. The funeral will take place at Borella cemetery (Anglican section) on Thursday, November 28. He leaves his wife Gladys Wijemanne, nee Wettasinghe, three daughters in UK, Canada and Austria and son Dharmaraj. |
