Japan will develop an economic programme that aims to bring the benefits of the peace process to the entire country, senior officials told the Daily News yesterday. The details of this package will be discussed when Prime minister Wickremesinghe visits Japan next week. Aid flows to Sri Lanka are expected to increase as the peace process shows progress. Japan's special envoy for the Sri Lankan peace process Yasushi Akashi told yesterday's meeting that for the Tokyo pledging conference to be meaningful there would have to be substantial progress in the peace process. He added that there is special "support for the Prime Minister's proposals which incorporate the Regaining Sri Lanka initiative". Japan is already Sri Lanka's largest donor with a long history of economic cooperation. |
