The Railway Department augmented its rolling stock by importing 15 Diesel Multiple Units from China, ten state-of-the art locomotives from France and 40 freight wagons from Pakistan at a cost of Rs.4.6 billion during the past few years. This investment aims to modernise the train service to increase the passenger traffic from 10 to 20 per cent and to increase the volume of freight transportation by 50 per cent by the year 2004 by replacing the ageing rolling stock of the Department.
