Cash robbery averted

Police yesterday successfully averted a cash robbery at Maradana and arrested three suspects who had robbed over fifty thousand rupees from a depositor at Maradana yesterday morning.

Two suspects were arrested, one by the Dematagoda Police, another by Maradana Police. "Our Crime Branch men arrested two suspects who were getting away in a three-wheeler without a number plate in the Dematagoda area." OIC Dematagoda Police Chief Inspector Jayantha Liyanage told the Daily News.

He said, the two suspects seeing the Police vehicle had turned into another side street and had fled away from the three wheeler." Police had given chase and arrested them while they were trying to throw a hand grenade at the Police officers.

Police had recovered several hand grenades, one pistol, cash of Rs 53,000 (a part of the loot money) from the suspects.

It is reported that suspects had robbed the cash from a person who was on his way to deposit it at the People's Bank.

Police are conducting further investigations to arrest another two suspects who are absconding.

Moneragala Year 5 scholars get tour, prizes

A special educational tour and presentation of prizes for 73 schoolchildren from Moneragala district who passed the year 5 scholarship examination despite the severe difficulties they had undergone during the recent drought has been organized by the Human Resource Management Council of the Presidential Secretariat.

These children are from 22 schools in the most severely affected Tanamalwila, Sevanagala and Kataragama Divisions and they will take part in a tour of the Dehiwala Zoo, Independent Television Network Station, Parliament, Bellanwila Raja Maha Viharaya, Independence Hall, Rupavahini TV Station, Planetarium, World Trade Centre, Godage Publishing House, Viharamaha Devi Park, President's Office, and Galle Face Green.

The tour will be for three days. The last day they will be hosted by the Isipathana Maha Vidyalaya with Nanda Malini and the Sponsorship Group of the school and will be given prizes by the People's Bank at the BMICH, Human Disaster Management Council announced.

Mahen complains increase in terror

Gampaha District UNP candidate Mahen Gunasekera complained of an increase in terror in Minuwangoda with the detection of SLFPers to the ranks of the UNP. He said Minuwangoda had now transformed into another Anamaduwa and the remanding of Reggie Ranatunga has had no effect.

He said two meeting venues of these SLFP youth who crossed over had come under attack over the last couple of days with cut outs of himself and Gampaha District leader Karu Jayasuriya, riddled with T 56 bullets.

He said the police were dragging its feet in apprehending the suspects, one of whom was an ex policeman now employed at the CWE and a Pradeshiya Sabha Member.
