Vicaut takes 60m crown in photo-finish
French sprinter Jimmy Vicaut clinched the European indoor men's 60m
title on Saturday, taking the gold medal after a photo-finish with
Britain's James Dasaolu.
Both men clocked 6.48sec, the best time in the world this season, but
the Frenchman got the nod with Italy's Michael Tumi taking bronze in
6.52sec.
"I don't know what to say. I didn't understand what happened. I
crossed the line, looked for the result and nothing," said the
21-year-old.
"Then I saw my name and I was very happy." There was also a
season-best performance in the men's triple jump where Italy's Daniele
Greco took gold with 17.70m.
Russia's Ruslan Samitov claimed silver with a leap of 17.30m off his
fifth attempt with fellow Aleksey Fyodorov settling for bronze on
17.12m.
Russia took silver and bronze in the men's high jump thanks to Sergey
Mudrov and Aleksey Dmitrik while Jaroslav Baba of the Czech Republic won
bronze.
With a jump of 2.35m, and despite three failures at 2.37m, Mudrov saw
off the challenge of his compatriot whose best was 2.33m. Baba's highest
was 2.31m. Sweden's Abeba Aregawi delighted the home crowd by taking
gold in the 1,500m, shrugging off the attentions of Spain's Isabel
Macias to win in 4:04.47.
Macias finished in 4:14.19 with Poland's Katarzyna Broniatowska third
in 4:14.30. Britain's Holly Bleasdale was crowned women's polevault
champion thanks to a best of 4.67m, ahead of Poland's Anna Rogowska and
Russia's Anzhelika Sidorova. Bleasdale and Rogowska both cleared 4.67m
before they failed three times at 4.72m. But Bleasdale took gold having
cleared 4.67m at her first attempt.
Sidorova completed the podium with 4.62m. |
