Ninety traders in Batticaloa district who hoodwinked unsuspecting customers by using scales and weighing machines not certified to sell underweight goods were rounded up by officers of the Department of Weights and Measures in raids conducted on shops during the last five months.

Fines totaling Rs 114,000 were imposed on them after producing them in courts, said officer-in-charge K. Vigneswaran.
