Broadlands Hydro Power Plant:
CEB, HNB ink deal

Hatton National Bank (HNB) agreed to provided financial assistance to
construct the Broadlands Hydro Power Plant. The agreement in this regard
was signed between officials of HNB and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB)
at the CEB Head Office last week.

This power station is estimated to cost US $ 82 million. HNB will
provide 15 percent of the total cost.
Construction work of Broadlands Hydro Power Plant is to commence
soon. It will add another 35 Mega Watts to the national electricity
grid, a CEB spokesman said.
The power plant which would be the last hydro-power plant related to
the Kelani River is expected to be completed as a project under the
Mahinda Chinthana Future Vision.
Power and Energy Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi held several
discussions with Broadlands Hydro Power Project's Director Kamal Laksiri
on the power project and sought details from the Grama Niladaris about
suitable places for resettlement of 48 families who would be relocated
to make way for the project.
The power station is to be built in Kithulgala. The Broadland Power
Station dam is 24 metres in height, 114 metres in breath and comprises
of a 3.5 kilometres long and 5.4 metre diameter tunnel.
The power station is expected to generate 126 GW hours of power. |
