Farmers unable to obtain reasonable prices for veggies

The vegetable farmers of Rangiri Dhambulla and Galewela, are lamenting over their inability to obtain a reasonable price for their vegetables.

Most of the farmers are moving away from growing vegetables and are migrating to cities because they do not like to engage in farming or other agricultural activities.

A farmer of Rangiri Dhambulu 'Govi Peramuna", W. A. Palitha said vegetable and onion farmers are facing many problems.

The price of fertiliser and labour cost have gone up rapidly. "Our farmers' living standards are very low.

There are more than 5,000 families depending on agriculture. Now they have become destitute," he said.

Most of them have abandoned farming due to economic difficulties, Palitha said.
